Here’s to an Incredible Edible Bristol

Bristol is ready to become the first ever Incredible Edible City in the world, says Sara of Incredible Edible Bristol. Read on to find out more and how you can get involved, there is a strategy meeting at Hamilton House on 3rd March…

Incredible Edibles are a network of more than 200 towns worldwide that began in the West Yorkshire town of Todmorden in 2007. The concept behind the network is that communities will join together to learn about growing and cooking food within their urban environment, working with local businesses as well as schools and colleges to create communities of growers.

As the foremost “foodie” city in England and having the amount of local food growing initiatives and independent restaurants and shops that Bristol has, Incredible Edible Bristol believes, through consultation and response, that Bristol is ready to be the first ever Incredible Edible City in the world. We aim to create an environment where people and communities of all age groups and ethnicities can join together in growing their own food and learn about cooking that food, to create new communities out of old.

The aim is to identify pieces of land citywide that are ripe for using and, once given the ok, to plant that land with food literally for the local community. There will be area hubs so that each part of Bristol can make its own food choices and we will be working to ensure that all involved are rewarded with both growing knowledge and a harvest.

Incredible Edible Bristol are also very aware of the quantity of food growing projects there are in the city and part of the aim is to create an umbrella network for all these projects. This will mean that they can be linked with each other and benefit from each other’s experiences, as well as having a hub where people who wish to volunteer in the city as food growers, can be signposted from.

We are very excited to be working with Food Connections as our belief is that providence of food is necessary for wellbeing and taking control of lives. We hope to be at the Food Connections Festival in May, perhaps planting a permanent reminder of the festival somewhere around Millennium Square.

In the meantime please join our Strategy Group at a meeting at Hamilton House on March 3rd from 7pm. There will be speakers from both Bristol and the Incredible Edible Network and the chance to sign up to join in with creating food gardens in your area and beyond.
