2015 archives: SATURDAY EVENTS

It’s the final day of Food Connections (boooo!) but never fear, we’ll be going out with a bang! We’ve packed out our last day with the biggest and most extravagantly amazing celebration of food this city has ever seen!

Taking place in the heart of Easton, the Spice Festival will celebrate this wonderfully diverse part of the city. Feast on spiced up street food from around the world, learn how to use spice in food with our cookery demonstrations, find out more about the history of spice and let the kids loose in the children’s area, where they will enjoy tasting workshops and painting with spices.
Local & Seasonal’ is a 2-hour introduction to food produce in the South West and how it changes through the year. You will learn basic knife skills, cookery techniques and presentation tips, plus the natural and sustainable way to celebrate the amazing flavours of the South West!
And sample some delicious coffee at Plenty Grocery Store’s Little & Long Coffee tasting session, as part of their #tasteplenty series.
Plus, we’re going foraging for tasty and nutritious wild plants in the picturesque surroundings of Blaise Estate! Martin Bailey from Go Foraging will talk about how you can create delicious meals from the wild ingredients you collect.
And one for the kids! Create a gutter sundae with donated, unsold food from local fruit markets, supermarkets and food producers that would otherwise have been thrown away. The ice cream will be super-fresh and supplied by Vee Double Moo! Using guttering supplied by a local building supplies merchant, let’s create an imaginative and delicious sundae including cookie pieces, fruit, nuts, chocolate, brownie, sweets and then eat your section of the sundae once it’s finished!
Local chef Jo Ingleby will be cooking up a storm in the farm’s new outdoor kitchen. Children will be taken on a harvest and taste adventure around the farm’s vegetable gardens and will learn to cook some delicious, seasonal dishes.
Cheese School returns to Food Connections, this time in collaboration with Sam Leach and Beccy Massey of Birch to host a raw cheese and real cider tasting. The afternoon will include a comparative tasting and discussion of the relative merits of pasteurised vs unpasteurised cheeses. There will be a range of ciders open to taste, including a collaborative cider made by Birch and 40 Maltby Street in London.
Reveal the drinkables at your fingertips on the Wild Booze Forage with Andy Hamilton. Indulge in an evening stroll while you sip on something alcoholic, share stories of all things boozy, and celebrate the centuries-old symbiosis between plants and booze.
If you’re interested in butchery, go along to Chat/Chop/Shop. As well as butchery masterclass demonstrations, the butchers will also be opening the floor to your questions. There’ll also be a host of local producers sampling their wares in store.
At ‘Meet the Bristol Bakers’ you’ll join Mark from Mark’s Bread and Alex from East Bristol Bakery as they share their baking wisdom with you. If you’ve been having a go at making your own sourdough as part of our Sourdough Starter chain, why not bring it along and get an expert opinion, as well as tips on how to bake the best loaf.
At the Golden Hill Community Garden Spring Fair, enjoy live music, pizza and cake, free kids’ activities pond dipping, badge making, clay play, morris dancing and a plant sale with all the veg, plants and flowers you need to grow your own.

And, stretch yourself out at the Yoga Supper! The evening begins with a hatha yoga class led by one of BCY’s wonderful teachers then we’ll roll up our mats to tuck in to a delicious spread of nourishing delights from Come to Good. It will be a 2-course supper including a seasonal soda, after dinner hot drink plus a little treat to take home.

Pickle Shack will be raising the stakes at their Pop-up Community Feast. The food served on the evening will not only adhere to their produce promise, but be sourced exclusively from community groups in and around Bristol who are growing, rearing and nurturing fantastic food.
And for those of you lucky enough to get tickets to the Dumpling Workshop  Danielle Coombs, of Bishopston Supper Club, and Jo Chow of Wai Yee Hong Chinese supermarket will demonstrate how easy it is to make Chinese dumplings. Attendees will learn how to fold jiaozi and wontons, have a taste of cooked pot-stickers and wonton soup, and will get to take away their own dumplings and wontons to cook at home, as well as a goody-bag of ingredients from Wai Yee Hong.
See this year’s Eat Drink Bristol Fashion out in style at their finale party! Nowhere in Bristol is a better surrounding for a sunny evening of music.
And finally, to mark the culmination of the Food Connections Festival, we have something very special tonight. We’ve teamed up with Bristol Fairtrade to host a three-course Gala Dinner created by the Michelin Starred chefs from Casamia, using Fair Trade and locally sourced ingredients. The dinner will to coincide with World Fair Trade Day and Bristol’s 10th Anniversary as a Fairtrade City and will pull together the threads of sustainability, conscious consumerism, and incredible food that are integral to the Food Connections ethos. We’ll also be announcing the Food Connections Young Chef and Young Baker of the year.
Come down and make the most of the final day of Food Connections!
