From farm to plate with the Better Food Company

Experience your food’s journey first hand

Phil Haughton set up Bristol’s Better Food Company in 1992 because he wanted to showcase what the farmers in our region are producing. Having worked in farming for 40 years, including founding The Community Farm, Phil is passionate about food supply in the local area.

As part of Bristol Food Connections, the Better Food Company is offering the unique opportunity for people to experience their food’s journey first hand. “They are a chance to really understand what it takes to produce great local food,” says Phil, adding: “They will be fun, inspiring and represent a unique insight into the processes from the farm to the plate.”

There are three journeys to go on:

A Ploughman’s Day Out – the story of cheese and beer (Saturday 3rd May)
Tour barley fields, meet a dairy herd, learn how to make cheese and the process of beer making.  Find out more.

Sheep Farming – from field to fork (Wednesday 7th May)
Visit a farm to learn about the whole sheep rearing process, before learning about the butchery process and picking up some cooking tips. Find out more.

Our Daily Bread – from wheat field to bakery (Saturday 10th May)
Visit wheat fields and mill your own flour before heading to Hobbs House Bakery for a tour, bread tasting and afternoon tea. Find out more.

The journeys could not be based around a better city, Phil explains: “Bristol is buzzing with excitement and can do attitude towards a more sustainable food supply chain. There is no other city like it. There is something for everyone. Our city feels like it has a real pride around food farming and community.”

The Food and Farming Awards are taking place in Bristol for the first time this year and mark the launch of Bristol Food Connections. Visit our What’s on section for the full programme of events.
