BBC Radio 4’s Costing the Earth presents four menus to save the planet
Eating ethically has never been so fraught – there are all the competing considerations of animal welfare, land use, fair trade and chemicals. But perhaps the consideration that trumps everything else is the carbon footprint of our food.
If we’re serious about dealing with climate change then we (as individuals or as governments acting on our behalf) have to eat low carbon food.
But what does that imply? Low food miles? No meat? Animals that eat only food waste? Or what about intensive agriculture that uses animals that grow quickly, so they can be slaughtered before they emit too much methane?
Four experts offer us their competing visions for a globally sustainable menu.
Hosted by Tom Heap, the debate will be transmitted on Radio 4 as part of the Costing the Earth series on Tuesday 3rd of May at 3.30pm and Wednesday 4th of May at 9pm.
This is a free event.
